As we approach the Summer Solstice-the longest day of the year, let’s talk about the TCM understanding of this season, it’s element, the organs most affected and the ways our lifestyle can benefit our body, mind and spirit.
Summer is the time when the seeds we planted in spring begin to blossom and bear fruit. This is why we see the energy of summer as being a blooming outward expanding energy.
Summer is about living life joyfully, with open hearted enthusiasm, passionate endeavours and embracing relationships by offering and receiving love.
Summer is connected to the Fire element and the Heart + Small Intestine organs.
The Heart is said to be the Emperor within the body according to TCM. It is the commander of Blood and blood vessels. Any excess is eventually passed through the Small Intestines.
The Heart is also said to house the Shén-our conscious Spirit, and the Heart anchors the Mind.
The Heart rules our Blood and blood vessels to regulate blood flow, heartbeat and pulse. Nourishing Blood within the Heart allows it to embrace the Shén providing it a peaceful, cool place to rest at night leading to deep restful sleep.
When there is imbalance of the Fire Element we experience such things as anxiety, insomnia, palpitations, restlessness, disconnect from ourselves and others, over excitability or over stimulation. It can even manifest in personality traits such as arrogance, impatience and impulsiveness.
With the use of acupuncture, your body and mind can reach equilibrium helping you sleep better, feel calmer, think more clearly, improve circulation, balance feelings of hot and cold, reduce palpitations and anxious feelings, allowing you to be more receptive to the wondrous joys around you.
