When you think about acupuncture, what comes to mind?
For many people, it’s needles — followed pretty quickly by the question: “But what would I actually go for?” Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) acupuncture can be used to address specific concerns, but many people also incorporate it into a broader approach to their overall health and wellness.
So, what does that actually mean?
TCM Looks at the Bigger Picture
One of the things that makes Traditional Chinese Medicine different is that your appointment isn’t necessarily focused on just one symptom. You may come in because you’re experiencing headaches, for example, but your acupuncturist may also ask about your sleep, stress, digestion, energy levels, menstrual cycle and other aspects of your health.
Why? Because TCM considers patterns within the body rather than looking at each symptom entirely on its own. That means two people who book acupuncture for the same concern may not necessarily receive the same treatment.
What Can TCM Acupuncture Help With?
People seek acupuncture for a wide variety of reasons. Some are looking for support with a particular concern, while others include acupuncture as part of their regular wellness routine. Some common reasons people explore acupuncture include:
- Stress and difficulty relaxing
- Sleep concerns
- Headaches and migraines
- Muscle tension and musculoskeletal discomfort
- Digestive concerns
- Menstrual and hormonal symptoms
- General fatigue or low energy
- Overall health and well-being
Your treatment will depend on your individual health history, what you’re experiencing and your goals for care.
Supporting Stress and Sleep
You don’t have to be injured or in pain to benefit from taking care of yourself. Stress and poor sleep can have a noticeable effect on how we feel day to day — physically and mentally. When we’re busy, however, they’re also two things that can be easy to overlook.
Some people use acupuncture as part of their approach to managing stress, improving relaxation and supporting healthier sleep patterns. It isn’t about eliminating stress from your life. Unfortunately, acupuncture can’t clear your inbox, get the kids where they need to go or give you an extra four hours in the day. But creating space to slow down and take care of yourself can still matter.
Supporting Your Body Through Different Stages of Life
Our needs don’t stay the same throughout our lives. Changes in activity, work, stress, sleep, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, postpartum recovery and menopause can all affect how we feel. TCM acupuncture can be individualized based on what’s happening in your body and your life at that particular time, rather than following one standard treatment plan.
That individualized approach is a big part of TCM care.
What Happens at an Acupuncture Appointment?
If you’ve never tried acupuncture, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect. Your first visit begins with a conversation about your health history, current concerns and goals. Your Registered Acupuncturist may ask questions that seem broader than the reason you booked — including questions about sleep, digestion, stress, energy and other aspects of your health.
From there, very fine, sterile, single-use needles are placed at specific acupuncture points selected for your individual treatment. Most people are surprised by just how fine acupuncture needles actually are. You may feel a small sensation as a needle is inserted, while other points may barely be noticeable. Once the needles are in place, you have some time to rest — something many of us could probably use a little more of! We often refer to this time as your “acu-nap” and it’s a wonderful rest.
Do You Need to Have a Specific Problem to Book Acupuncture?
Not necessarily. You may have a specific concern you’d like addressed, or you may simply be interested in incorporating acupuncture into your overall wellness routine. Either is a perfectly reasonable place to start.
You also don’t need to understand TCM or know which acupuncture points you need before you arrive. That’s your practitioner’s job. Your job is simply to tell them what’s been going on and what you’d like help with.
Wellness Doesn’t Have to Mean Waiting Until Something Is Wrong
Taking care of yourself isn’t only something to think about once you’re injured, exhausted or uncomfortable enough that it starts interfering with your day. Movement, sleep, nutrition, stress management and appropriate healthcare all play different roles in maintaining our health. For some people, TCM acupuncture becomes another piece of that bigger wellness picture.
